DAYS OF THE DEAD II - March 9-11, 2012

I will be in the artist alley of the DAYS OF THE DEAD II convention the weekend of March 9th-11th, 2012. This is their 2nd year as a convention and their 1st in Atlanta. Here is the official Facebook page. It looks like they have a great guest list (check it out here) including Linnea Quigley (links a little NSFWish) and the return of the Walking Dead zombie extras.

Based on what I've read, they are really gunning for a Dragon*Con type feel with after hours parties at the hotel. If you want to join the party you can reserve your room here. I'll be in the artist alley all weekend so come by and say hello. I've been working on a bunch of horror themed work and will have a lot of new stuff available.

Times have been pretty crazy in the Belligerent Monkey household lately and haven't had a chance to post much. 2011 was a great year and 2012 is shaping up to be even bigger and better. I've got a lot of stuff in the works that I will post about as they get closer (including a new convention and the return of my artwork on some old walls). I'm currently working on some new stuff that I'm really excited about. As usual I'll post it when I'm done.

The Bands of the Belligerent Monkey

My whole life I've enjoyed music. My father and brother are both insanely talented guitar players. One of my earliest memories is of playing my dad's guitar. Since I was a teenager I always wanted to be in bands. But there was just one problem. And that is my complete lack of musical talent. I tried guitar first and then switched to bass because I figured it was easier with less strings and less notes. Unfortunately the switch didn't make up for my lack of rhythm or tone deafness.

These issues didn't stop me from being in a bunch of bands. They did however make sure that every one of them were fake. While there was no chance of these actually being a real band, I still liked coming up with ideas, logos, and names for them. Here is a brief rundown of some of the bands.

Priority Male : This was a 3 piece grind core band. We would play every show in nothing but speedos. We talked about practicing once. Here's the logo:

All She Wrote :This actually started as an honest attempt to play music. It never got further than me on bass and a friend on guitar learning some Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys songs though. This was a side project to the next band. At the time my friend worked at a printing shop and printed a bunch of fliers of this:

Anal Jesus : The whole point was to have a band with the most offensive name possible. The thought process was that a lot of people would show up to either see or protest a band with this bad of a name. A member actually went so far as to copyright the name because he was afraid they rest of us would steal it. We had a few practices but the lack of a drummer wasn't balanced out by the crappy Screeching Weasel and Black Flag covers that we learned. Here's a flier I drew up for a fictitious show (note the punk rock):

The Wannabes and Never Wills : This band was completely made up. In theory it was a 3 piece Ramones/Screeching Weasel type band. I never came up with a logo but it did however provide me with alias that I used for a few years. I was Adam Wannabe (with an as-yet-to-be-determined band member named Never Will). I used the name to put out a few okay to kinda shitty zines (I'm cleaning out some old stuff and depending on how embarrassing these 10 to 12 year old zines are I might scan and post them) and my 1st email address (a.wannabe@mindspring.com).

Hobart : This was/is a pretty large fake band with the basic premise of being a very talented but very unlucky band. Our imaginary singer always got into some kind of trouble (arrest, over dose, family crisis, etc.) which caused us to cancel our show. We did get a real band to give us a mention when American Steel apologized to the crowd at the Earl that we couldn't open for them because of our lead singer's unfortunate arrest that afternoon for public drunkenness. I believe I played the triangle.

No Talent Ass Clowns : This is the closest to a real band as I've been in because we actually played a show. I really should put show in quotation marks because it was just a party where we banged on some instruments for a bit. The whole idea behind the band was that we sucked. Badly. We actually kicked out a member because he was too talented (check out his real and talented band here). We all sucked with the exception of our lead singer. Riddle was an amazing front man with a fantastic metal yell and the ability to make up lyrics on the fly (Power Drill was a bona fide hit). Here's a logo featuring Riddle as our official mascot:

Here's a new-ish painting that I just finished a week or 2 ago. It's the 2nd painting with this character. Check out the 1st here. I think it's one of my favorite paintings I've done recently. And thanks to a very nice person at the L5P Halloween Festival, it's found it's way to a nice new home.

I don't think I'm done with this character yet. So I'm pretty sure I'll have some more luchador paintings in the future. Now I just need to name him and come up with his story. Any suggestions?

I had it at the EAV Strut a couple of weeks ago. I sold this one but I 'm working on another that should be ready just in time for the upcoming Little 5 Points Halloween Festival (10/22/11). New Painting - El Luchador!

Here's a new-ish painting I finished recently. It's acrylic paint on a 16"x20" canvas.

I had it ready just in time for the EAV Strut a couple of weeks ago. I had a few people stop and ask if I was channeling my inner Phantom Troublemaker. Originally this was going to have the Mexican flag as the background. After I painted it (from memory), I realized I had actually painted the Hungarian flag. Whoever ever heard of a Hungarian luchador? So much for using visual references. So I ended up using colors from the mask instead. There is a line in red sharpie just under the wording that's got to have at least 6 coats of paint on it before I was able to cover it up. The day after drawing the B! logo it occurred to me that I may have just invented the Big Lots logo. Luckily I hadn't (visual references!). I have another painting using the same character that I'm just about finished with. It turned out pretty well and I'll post it as soon as it's done.

We here at the Belligerent Monkey H.Q. have recently been blessed with a new addition to the family. And like any addition to the family, they have to go somewhere. And that somewhere was my office. Today, my office is a beautiful nursery with a beautiful baby girl calling it her home. But for many years it looked like this:

What follows are a ton of photos I took right before I packed up everything and moved it down to the basement (aka the Belligerent Monkey Office II). I have a couple of bookshelves set up with some toys displayed but no where near like before. Our next house is going to have to include a library for all of daddy's toys that the girls get to look at but not touch. Click on the photos to see a much larger version.

East Atlanta Strut 9/17/11 (This Weekend!)

I really like the circular pattern they set up the booths in this year. Hopefully it means more people will be inclined to check everyone out. The weatherman is promising sunny and mid-70's, which sounds about perfect. Hope to see you there...

I'm Not the Only Artist in the Family

Here's a recent drawing by my 4 year old daughter who is a big fan of Star Wars.

After the 1st time watching Star Wars, she told me it was so pretty when Luke and Leia got married at the end. After watching Empire Strikes Back, she told me it scared her when Darth Vader made Han Solo flat. Due to our skipping of some of the scarier scenes, she still wonders what happens to "Obi-Nobi" and why he looks funny in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. She thinks the "chorm-stoopers" are not nice. And recently she's been requesting to watch the one with the bears in it.

Another perk of having a dorky kid is I get to buy her cool toys with the excuse they are for her. She has and loves the Galactic Heroes line of Star Wars toys. She doesn't have a lot, but she has the main characters, the Millennium Falcon, and AT-AT. The Millennium Falcon was so cool that I bought it 2 years before she was born.

Positano, Italy

A month or so back I took a vacation of a life time. I was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks in Italy and France for vacation. The reason sparking the trip was that 2 old/great friends were getting married in Positano, Italy. I did a couple of sketches for their wedding invitations and RSVPs which were Positano themed. Here they are with the names redacted.

Positano was great. We had an absolute blast and couldn't imagine a better trip. We were very lucky to make it and extremely happy for our friends.

Purchase a membership to Club Infinite Earths for $30 and, should the club go forward, you’re guaranteed to receive all of the official club figures released during the year. There will be 9 monthly 6" figures and 3 "oversized" figures (one shipped approximately each quarter). You’ll also receive the club-exclusive for 2012, to be revealed following the close of voting in our poll.
Every month starting approximately April 2012, you'll be automatically shipped the Club Infinite Earths figure. About every quarter, you'll also be shipped an "oversized" figure. You'll be billed as figures ship. Figures revealed to date are NAME and NAME.
Figures will begin shipping approximately two (2) business days prior to the official on-sale date.
Exact figures will be announced approximately one to two months before each on-sale date.
The special club-exclusive figure will be shipped sometime around the second quarter of the year. The figure is included in the cost of the membership ($30), however applicable shipping and taxes/fees will be charged at the time of shipment.

About Club Infinite Earths Memberships

Memberships are available for purchase from 7/22 at 2 p.m. PT through 8/5 at 2 p.m. PT here on MattyCollector.com.
Once the enrollment period has ended, memberships cannot be purchased until the following year.
Memberships are $30 each, plus the cost of the club figures, shipping, and applicable taxes/fees. The club-exclusive figure is included in this $30 membership fee, however shipping/taxes/fees are additional.
Should the club go forward, the total commitment for 2012 will be $255, plus applicable fees/taxes and shipping (varies depending on your location and the shipping method you choose). In honor of this weekend's Green Lantern movie, here's a commissioned comic book cover recreation I did a couple of years ago. The painting is acrylic paint on a 16"x20" canvas. This is the cover to Green Lantern #88 drawn and inked by Neal Adams.

Headed to see the movie tonight. I'm cautiously optimistic but the reviews have been pretty rough. Opting for the 2D version too. The last 3D movie we saw was too dark with the glasses. With this one spending a lot of time in space (I'm assuming), I want to actually be able to see everything.

Magnets!

So I recently starting making magnets of my prints. The magnets are approximately 2" by 3" and are all hand pressed by me. They have a metal shell, Mylar protective covering, and a magnetic backing. Any/all of my prints are available as magnets. If you don't see one in the photo below it just means I haven't pressed it yet. Custom magnets are also available. My Future Boyfriend

So we watched My Future Boyfriend on Sunday night. I was very happy to see all of my prints and the painting that were bought for set dressing made it into the movie. The prints were in a great spot in the office and were in a lot of scenes. And the painting was featured pretty predominantly in a couple of scenes. Third Half Studios also had their prints in a couple of nice scenes too. Here are some screen caps:

As I've mentioned before here, here, and here, I had some artwork that was bought for set dressing for the ABC Family movie My Future Boyfriend. It premieres this Sunday night (4/10) at 8pm. Check out the trailer below.

If you look close, you can see 3 of my prints hanging in the background. In the scenes in her office (at 0:06, 0:14, and 0:33), you can just make out framed copies of my day of the dead Elvis, tattooed lady, and sacred heart of dixie prints. There is also the chance of seeing my bat boy painting as well as some stuff by the ladies at 3rd Half Studios. Keep your eyes out and the pause button ready. I'm sure I will be posting screen caps from it next week...

Movie Update

As I've mentioned before here and here, I had some art that was bought to be used as set dressing for an ABC Family movie. I just found out that the movie has changed names and got a release date. The movie was called Always and Forever but is now called My Future Boyfriend. It will be aired April 10, 2011 on ABC Family. Can't wait to see if any artwork made it past the cutting room and on tv...

Here's the latest synopsis:

A curious human from a well-ordered but loveless future, P-A-X-497/341 (aka Pax), played by Barry Watson, returns to the year 2011 to satisfy his curiosity about such archaic concepts as love, passion and sex, and winds up making his own discoveries when he meets the woman of his dreams, Elizabeth Barrett, portrayed by Sara Rue, a newly published romance novelist.

When Pax doesn't return to the future by the given deadline, Bob (Fred Willard), his fellow scientist, travels back in time to find Pax. Meanwhile as Elizabeth is helping Pax learn about love, she ends up confiding in her colleague, played by Valerie Harper, about her own upcoming "surprise" engagement.

1965 Dodge Dart

Here are a couple of old photo manipulations of one of my old cars. The car was a 1965 Dodge Dart. It looked better than it ran and it held down my driveway for much longer than I actually drove it. The photos were printed out and then photocopied. The copy was then copied, then that copy was copied, and so on until I ended up with some nice distortions.

Back when I was younger and before photoshop was around, I used to love to play with my dad's copier at work. If you can, track down the book Copy Art by Patrick Firpo, Lester Alexander, Claudia Katayanagi, and Steve Ditlea. It has some amazing copy artwork and breaks down methods the artists used. A little redundant in the age of photoshop but still cool to see.

The Immortal Lee County Killers

The Immortal Lee County Killers were a great band from Auburn, Alabama that I knew when in was in college. They described their sound as "the real punk blues" and they were great live. They put out a bunch of 7-inches and some full length albums on Estrus and Homo Habilis. Their 1st album (The Essential Fucked Up Blues) was great and still remains one of my favorites. Here's one of my favorite songs off that album:

You can read up on them here. I drew a few things for them including flier, 7-inch cover, and comic book. The flier and 7-inch cover are below. I'll post the comic later.

The 7inch was Train She Rides out on Homo Habilis Records (2000). It's a song about a guy who got in a fight with his girlfriend, gets drunk, passes out next to some railroad tracks, a train comes along with his girlfriend on board, and he gets his thumb chopped off as it runs by. I was told it was based on a true story but I never saw the thumb that was supposedly kept in a freezer for many years after the fact. The remix version on side B was pretty great and worth tracking down.

The flier was for a Friday the 13th show and I honestly can't remember where or when. It would have to have been from sometime in 2000. The same basic shot/drawing made it's way into the comic book.

Inman Park Festival April 30 - May 1

I just found out that I was accepted in this years Inman Park Festival. Inman Park is a 2-day festival that's one of the largest festivals in Atlanta. This will be my first time participating as a vendor so I'm excited. Now I just need to stop playing Black Ops and actually get some painting done...

'Superman Classic' by Rob Pratt

Superman Classic' is a fan animated short by by Rob Pratt. It's hand drawn animation with a great 40's era background. The video below includes a brief description by Pratt himself. Definitely some impressive stuff.

My favorite parts were the handing back of the toy robot and the realization of the scale at the end. Cool stuff!

Here is a commissioned piece I recently finished. It's acrylic paint on 16"x20" canvas. They gave me a couple of photos of their twins and wanted a Wonder Twins painting. I don't do realistic photo based paintings very often but I think it turned out pretty well. They seemed to be pretty happy with it.

They were originally photos of Jessica Juggs (check out her band Mourdella here) taken at one of our parties where she performed a couple of her fire tricks. About a year or so later she was in a bad bicycle accident. I photoshoped the photos, framed them, and donated them to the benefit art show for her medical bills. XKL - Xtreme Kickball League

Going through some old files, I found this flier I had started but never finished for the now defunct XKL (Xtreme Kickball League).

We had a nice run of playing almost every Sunday for about 2.5 years. During that time we had drunken shenanigans, a snow game, rain games, a broken ankle, a separated shoulder, public urination, 7th inning Night Train round robins, extra runs awarded due to opponents spilled beers, table tops, 2 or 3 future couples met on the field for the 1st time, and a lot of fun. Along the way, we met some of our best friends playing kickball. Good times.

Here are a couple of logos I made for the league.

Even after 8 years, my shirt from Cafe Press with the Black Label logo has held up great and is still in my regular t-shirt rotation.

The binary code in the background is based on the Arecibo message. I ended up cropping it to fit so it actually reads as gibberish if you actually know how to read it (which I don't).

If you want to see it in person, it's now hanging on a wall at the the Village Theatre.

2010 was a great year for me. I participated in the most shows/festivals I'd ever done ( none of which got rained out this year), I was interviewed by Scoutmob and Thrillist, and I got to meet a lot of new/great people. 2011 is shaping up to be even better. There will be at least a 1 or 2 new festivals this year, a new place where I'll be hanging some paintings and prints, and the possibility of seeing my stuff on TV!

2010 - The Year of Buffyclub

Over this past year, we have gotten together regularly with a couple of friends and watched all of the seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. We started in January and will finish this week. Going into it, I had never seen a single episode of either but had seen the movie. I had a couple of friends who really liked the shows and 1 out of the 4 in our group had seen the whole thing before. It wasn't long before I became a huge fan of the series and the characters. I highly recommend checking out the series if you haven't yet. The 1st season was a little weak but by season 2 it really got going. I can't wait to finish Angel so I can start on the Buffy Season 8 comics.

Here are a couple of paintings I did of Buffy and Angel in the style of Bruce Timm (Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited). Both are acrylic paint on 12"x24" canvas.

Being a big toy fan/collector, it wasn't too long into the seasons before I started looking into the Buffy toy options. Once I saw the Phantom Stranger's collection/display at his house I was sold and started to pick them up off ebay or at various conventions. Here is a photo of my Buffy shelf in my office/toy room.

Some of my favorites are the library playset, Anya in her bunny suit, and the Lorne stage. The library is huge, feels really sturdy, looks great, and is a perfect display for the figures. I've been very impressed with it. I have pretty much everyone I want but may still pick up a figure or 2.

In short, it's an awesome show so go check it out. All the seasons are currently available via streaming on Netflix.
